Police Captain

The City of Pleasant Hill is seeking a collaborative and strong leader and manager to serve as the new Police Captain. 

Pleasant Hill is a modern and dynamic city in the East Bay Area of San Francisco and home to approximately 35,000 residents. Located at the center of the Interstate 680 corridor in Contra Costa County, Pleasant Hill is characterized by small-town charm and a strong sense of community. 

The ideal candidate will possess strong administrative and interpersonal skills and be someone who leads by example both on and off duty. He or she must be capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, and possess the ability to clearly communicate organizational vision, direction, and purpose through formal and informal means. The candidate should demonstrate creativity and be familiar with modern police best practices and be capable of working with a wide variety of stakeholders to increase organizational capacity and effectiveness. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and increase effective working relationships with employees, the general public, City staff, elected officials, outside agencies, and community representatives. A team player with excellent relationship building skills and the ability to connect with people at all levels is a must for this position. Candidates with demonstrated budget and personnel experience will be highly valued. 

At a minimum, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public or business administration, or related fields, and have at least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a supervisory and management capacity, including at least two (2) years at the level of a Lieutenant or an equivalent rank. POST Command College, the FBI National Academy, or a Master’s degree are preferred. Candidates must possess, or have the ability to obtain, an Advanced P.O.S.T. Management Certificate. 

The monthly salary range for the incoming Police Captain is $12,118 – $16,117 (represented by Management Pay Plan – currently in negotiations), DOQ.
